ACS Initial Assessment in Telford

Course Information

The ACS Initial Domestic Gas Safety course at Teach A Trade is designed for learners and engineers who are ready to complete their initial ACS assessment and take the next step towards Gas Safe registration. Delivered from our practical training centre in Telford, this course covers the core domestic gas safety assessment, commonly known as CCN1, along with the key appliance modules required for domestic gas work.

This course is suitable for candidates who have completed a recognised gas training route, such as a Gas Managed Learning Programme, or who have relevant industry experience and now need to complete their ACS Initial assessment. It is also suitable for engineers whose ACS qualifications have expired beyond the reassessment window and who therefore need to complete the initial assessment route again.

Throughout the course, candidates are assessed against the standards required to work safely and competently on domestic gas installations and appliances. The programme includes a combination of theory assessments, practical assessments and appliance-specific assessment tasks, helping candidates demonstrate the competence required before applying to the Gas Safe Register.

Course Structure

The ACS Initial Domestic Gas Safety course is delivered over five days. The course includes preparation, practical assessment and theory assessment across core domestic gas safety and the standard domestic appliance modules.

Candidates will complete CCN1 Core Domestic Gas Safety first, followed by the relevant appliance modules. The standard package includes CENWAT, CKR1 and HTR1. MET1 can also be added where required, depending on the type of work the candidate intends to carry out.

Entry Requirements

Candidates must meet the required ACS entry criteria before being accepted onto the Initial Domestic Gas Safety assessment. This normally means you must have completed a recognised training programme, hold relevant qualifications, or be able to provide evidence of suitable industry experience.

Before booking, candidates may be asked to provide:

  • Evidence of gas training or a completed Managed Learning Programme.
  • A completed portfolio of workplace evidence.
  • Proof of relevant plumbing, heating or mechanical services experience.
  • Previous gas certificates, where applicable.
  • Employer or mentor confirmation of supervised gas work.
  • Photo ID and National Insurance number.

If you are unsure whether you meet the entry requirements, contact Teach A Trade before booking. We can review your background and advise whether you are ready for ACS Initial assessment or whether further training or portfolio evidence is required first.

Pre Requisites

Candidates must be ready to complete CCN1 Core Domestic Gas Safety before progressing onto appliance modules. CCN1 is the core assessment and is required before CENWAT, CKR1, HTR1 or MET1 can be completed.

For most new entrants, the ACS Initial assessment follows completion of a recognised Gas Managed Learning Programme and a suitable portfolio of supervised workplace evidence. Candidates should not book ACS Initial until they have been advised that their training and evidence are sufficient.

If your previous ACS qualifications have expired for more than 12 months, you may need to complete the Initial ACS route rather than the shorter reassessment route. We can confirm the correct option before you book.

Expiry

5 years

ACS certificates are normally valid for five years. Once your certificates are nearing expiry, you will need to complete ACS Reassessment to maintain your Gas Safe registration.

Assessment

The ACS Initial assessment includes both theory and practical assessment activities, including:

  • Written and multiple-choice theory assessments.
  • Core Domestic Gas Safety assessment.
  • Practical assessment on gas pipework.
  • Tightness testing and purging.
  • Appliance commissioning and safety checks.
  • Combustion performance analysis.
  • Flue and ventilation assessment.
  • Fault-finding and unsafe-situation scenarios.
  • Appliance-specific assessments for CENWAT, CKR1 and HTR1.
  • Optional MET1 assessment where required.

The purpose of the assessment is to confirm that candidates can work safely, competently and independently before applying to the Gas Safe Register.

Additional Information

On the day of assessment, candidates should bring:

  • Photo ID.
  • National Insurance number.
  • Two passport-style photographs, if required.
  • Evidence of previous training or qualifications.
  • Completed portfolio evidence, where applicable.
  • Any expired ACS certificates, where relevant.
  • Calculator.
  • Pens and note-taking materials.
  • Suitable workwear and PPE for practical assessment.

Assessment days are structured and demanding, so candidates should arrive prepared. If you are unsure what evidence to bring, speak to the Teach A Trade team before your course start date.
