Funded Training for Refrigeration, Air Conditioning, Electrical & Heat Pump Engineers
Course Overview
This fully funded course leads to the City & Guilds 2079-11 Level 2 Award in F-Gas and ODS Regulations (Category 1)—the legally required qualification for engineers working with fluorinated gases and ozone-depleting substances in stationary refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump systems.
Whether you’re an experienced engineer or looking to upskill, this course ensures you meet UK and EU regulatory standards for handling F-Gas safely and responsibly.

Key Learning Outcomes
Module 1 – Introduction to F-Gas
Module 2 – City and Guilds 2o79 – 11
Participants will gain the skills and knowledge to:
- Understand the principles of vapour compression and thermodynamics
- Identify components, functions, and leakage risks in RACHP systems
- Apply safe working practices for installation, commissioning, and servicing
- Perform pressure testing, evacuation, and refrigerant charging
- Detect and prevent leaks, recover refrigerants and oils, and prepare for disposal
- Maintain accurate records and comply with F-Gas logbook requirements
Certification –
Upon successful completion, learners receive the City & Guilds 2079-11 Category 1 Certificate, qualifying them to carry out all F-Gas-related activities on systems of any size.

Entry Requirements
There are two sets of entry requirements, they are split into for the qualification requirements and funding requirements –
Qualification –
- Existing engineers in the RACHP sector needing certification to comply with F-Gas regulations.
- Professionals with relevant experience seeking formal qualification.
- Electricians, Heating Engineers or HVAC engineers
- Not suitable for complete beginners—prior knowledge or qualifications in the field are required.
Funding –
In order to meet the funding requirements potential learners must live one of these postcodes – WV, DY, WS, B or CV. Teach A Trade are required to complete a thorough initial assessment to check suitability for the Skills Bootcamps. Pre Requisites
Funding Bands Information –
Working in partnership with the West Midlands Combined Authority delivering Skills Bootcamps, the cost of the course will either be Fully Funded, 90% funded 70% funded or 50% funded, the funding bands are below –
- Unemployed, Employed or self-employed learner on a Low wage (£34,194 pa or below) = Fully Funded
- Independent – Employed/self-employed learner, non-low wage (£34,195 pa or above) = 50% Funded
- Employed Employed/self-employed learner – non-low wage (£34,195 pa or above) – SME – 90% Funded
- Employed/self-employed learner – non-low wage (£34,195 pa or above) – Large employer – 70% Funded
Where a learner is unemployed, the Skills Bootcamp will be fully funded.
Where the learner is Employed/Self-employed AND low wage the Skills Bootcamp will be fully funded.
Company size definitions –
- SME = A business that has fewer than 250 employees and or a turnover of up to £50 million
- Large Company = A business that has more than 250 employees and or turnover or £50 million

Outcome Evidence Requirement –
As part of the West Midlands Combined Authorities investment in your skills and career progression it is imperative that the funds are used to provide real world positive impact to ensure this Teach A Trade must collect learner outcomes, below will provide guidance on learner outcomes.
Learner Outcome Types, positive outcomes (according to learner type) must be achieved within 6-months of course completion (or by 30th September 2026, the outcomes time limit – whichever occurs first).
- Independent/unemployed Learner – evidence of a new job which must be continuous employment for at least 12-weeks or an apprenticeship.
- Self-employed Learner – The learner obtaining new contracts or new opportunities linked to the Skills Bootcamp.
- Co-funded Learner – evidence of a new role or additional responsibilities in an existing role – all outcomes must utilise the skills acquired via the Skills Bootcamp.

Delivery: Classroom-based theory + hands-on practical training
Assessment:
- City & Guilds GOLA online multiple-choice exam
- Practical assessment covering leak detection, recovery, and system servicing
